Conservative Averaging as a Special Method for PDE (Partial Differential Equations) with Discontinuous Coefficients

Professor Andris Buikis

University of Latvia

Full member of Latvian Academy of Sciences

Director of Science and Dialogue Center of Latvia

Abstract: By modeling practically interesting processes, very often we need consider the situation, when the medium has a layered structure. Speaking mathematically, such situation can be described by PDE (or its system) with piecewise constant/continuous coefficients. In this talk  I’ll show how conjugations conditions, non-ideal contact conditions etc. and their generalizations can be obtained by our original method of conservative averaging (CAM). The usage of CAM for separate relatively thin sub-domain or/and for sub-domain with large medium characteristic, leads to reduction of domain, in which the solution must be found. To apply CAM procedure for several layers, it is necessary to construct special type of polynomial and rational spline: which  interpolates the integral averaged values of the solution. In this case the original problem with discontinuous coefficients from  transforms to problem with continuous coefficients in . The usage of CAM for ill-posed inverse problems in some cases transforms them to well-posed inverse problems.

Turbulence and the Dynamics of Flows: Ideas, Advances, and Challenges

Professor Haris J. Catrakis

University of California

Irvine, USA

Abstract: Ideas, advances, and challenges in turbulence and the dynamics of flows are described with emphasis on basic problems as well as applications. Basic issues addressed include the behavior of diffusive and refractive turbulent fields and interfaces, the distribution of scales in fully-developed turbulence, the dependence of the flow behavior on scale, fractal aspects of turbulence, physical properties of large-Reynolds-number interfaces, large-scale dynamics, small-scale behavior, intermittency, and flow optimization.  Applied issues examined include multiresolution aspects of turbulent diffusion, the mixing efficiency of turbulent flows, robustness in turbulence, the propagation of optical wavefronts through refractive turbulent flows, the interfacial-fluid-thickness approach in aero-optics, laser beam propagation in turbulent flows, and optimization of aero-optical interactions for directed energy systems.  New perspectives and prospects for theories, experiments, and computations on fundamental and applied aspects of turbulence and the dynamics of flows are discussed.

Abstract: Polymeric asymmetric membrane and coating formation by solvent evaporation are industrial processes of major financial and scientific interest. There are many issues though that need to be addressed, in order to obtain a complete picture of the evaporation process, that leads to a better understanding of the underlying physics and consequently to the optimization of the process as well as to the production of membranes and coatings with desired properties.

One of the most important issues of the process is the estimation of diffusion coefficients in the polymeric solution as they affect the membrane morphology and have an unoverlooked impact on the quality of the final product. The aim of the present work is to apply fundamental principles of non-equilibrium thermodynamics to the estimation of the diffusion coefficients.  For this purpose the evaporation process is modeled as a coupled one dimensional heat & mass transfer problem with a moving boundary. Equilibrium is assumed at the gas phase-polymer solution interface. The Galerkin Finite Element method is used to solve simultaneously the non-linear governing equations. The numerical technique yields by comparison with gravimetric data the diffusion coefficients over a wide range of temperature and composition. The estimated diffusion coefficients based on free volume theory are in satisfactory agreement with the available experimental data. This allows a thorough study of the effect of process conditions such as polymer solution composition or the initial temperature on the membrane or coating morphology.
