Abstract

The field of microfluidic heat transfer is an emerging area of research due to the development of thermal microdevices. The use of thermal microdevices is highly desirable in various engineering fields, especially for electronics cooling and biomedical applications. This paper reviews the latest research conducted in the field of microfluidic heat transfer, which includes devices such as microchannels, micropumps, microturbines, microengines, as well as integrated microfluidic devices (or labs-on-chips). Recent experimental and numerical techniques relevant to the thermal MEMS field have also been emphasized. The mass implementation of thermal microdevices in future technology is still quite far, and in years to come, vast amounts of research need to be conducted before this becomes possible. Hence, potential future directions of research have been provided.
